D7 Silence

Silence. The absence of sound is also a type of material, defined in contrast to other modules filled with concrete material. It is like a building where there are walls vs. rooms.

Examples

• Arvo Pärt's works, where silence plays a great role, contrasting other material.
• The extreme example of silence, and perhaps the best known, is John Cage's 4'33", although the piece can also be meant to include the other sounds in the performance environment (coughing, air conditioning) as well.
